Also
known as the Kenyan Top Bar hive has the main advantages as its an all
in one hive and is simple to construct. However there is currently some
contention about top bars because traditionally you can't inspect the
comb horizontally and the bees may connect the comb to the side of the
hive, so you have to cut it off. Its disadvantages are its lack of
expandability, its more difficult to move around and beacuse they are
usually made by the owner, it doesnt have any interchangable parts.
If you decide to build your own top bar hive, I do suggest putting frames on your top bars to stop any inspection problem.
