American Foulbrood
AFB has been recorded in New Zealand since the 1800s and is currently
reported to be in only 0.2% of hives in New Zealand. This low
percentage is due to the the way AFB is delt with. Any hive in New
Zealand with AFB must be reported and burnt within 7 days. All
beekeeping tools and clothing must be washed and sterilized ( gloves to
be burnt ).
Courses are run several times a year on how to recognize AFB and in my opinion they are a must for all beekeepers.
The use of antibiotics or any other method to control AFB are strictly illegal in New Zealand
